"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're not alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global following.

But Haim will forever be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
